The cold temperatures mean area lakes are freezing up, but authorities are warning people to wait a little longer before walking on the ice.  

Anyone planning to venture out on the ice is urged to check ice thickness and make sure to let someone know where you are.  

Also, the bitter cold is a reminder to motorists to have their vehicle winter-ready with blankets, hats and gloves, and a full-tank of gas.  If you do break down or go into the ditch, call 9-1-1 and stay with your vehicle until help arrives.
