A nine-year-old boy is dead, and his father is severely injured after a crash in Barron County.

The Barron County Sheriff's Department says the crash happened just before 4 a.m. Sunday on Highway 8, west of County Road TT.

According to deputies, a car driven by 22-year-old Nicholas Rogalla of Rice Lake was traveling east on Hwy 8 when it crossed the centerline and struck a semi driven by 48-year-old Jerald Olmsted of Clintonville.

Olmsted’s semi overturned and slid into the ditch. He was extricated and taken by ambulance to the hospital with severe injuries.

His son, nine-year-old Alex Olmsted, a passenger in the semi, was trapped and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was taken to Mayo Hospital Barron with non-life threatening injuries.

Hwy 8 was closed for about eight and a half hours after the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Barron County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
